A public forum geared toward countering the spread of misinformation, particulalry during election season, is scheuled to be held Tuesday, Sept. 17 at Madera Community College.

Sponsored by Radio Bilingüe and the Central Valley Journalism Collaborative, the event “Fake News, Facts and Your Vote” will take place from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. with a welcome reception from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m.

This Spanish-language forum will bring together experts in journalism, politics, and media literacy to tackle the disinformation that often targets Latino and Hispanic communities in the U.S. 

The forum will address key questions, including:

Are Latinos a key target of fake news campaigns? and What are the dangers that misinformation poses to voters and society?

The forum will be broadcast live on all Radio Bilingüe stations and streamed online at radiobilingue.org. 

For those unable to attend, a repeat broadcast will air the following day and be shared across various partner networks.

This event offers a unique opportunity for community members to learn more about the tactics used in misinformation campaigns and the critical role of media literacy in safeguarding democratic processes.

The forum will feature the following panel of experts:

Ricardo Sandoval-Palos, public editor and ombudsman for PBS, will bring a national perspective. Sandoval-Palos is known for his work as a former editor at NPR’s “Morning Edition” and he co-authored the award-winning biography “The Fight in the Fields: Cesar Chavez and the Farmworkers Movement.:

Alfredo Corchado Jiménez, executive editor for Puente News Collaborative, will share his extensive experience covering the U.S.-Mexico border, organized crime, and political corruption. He is also a former Mexico City Bureau Chief for The Dallas Morning News.

Rafael Olavarria, a politics and migration fact-checker at Factchequeado, will offer insights into the non-partisan efforts to combat Spanish-language disinformation across Latino communities in the U.S.

Alma Martínez, executive director of the Central Valley Journalism Collaborative and former Radio Bilingüe producer, will share her expertise on the local media landscape in Madera and the broader Central Valley.

The discussion will be moderated by Samuel Orozco, national news and information director for Radio Bilingüe, who will guide the conversation through the various ways fake news impacts Latino voters and society.
