A Le Grand High school graduate with longtime community ties has been appointed as interim fire chief amid this week’s departure of Chief Derek Parker.
Casey Wilson will serve as the department’s top firefighter while Merced officials search for a permanent leader, according to a city press release.
“I am honored to step in at this time to ease the transition of leadership,” Wilson said in the release.
“I look forward to supporting the momentum of the department’s strategic plan. I am committed to upholding the mission of protecting life, property, and the environment through prevention, education, and emergency response. I look forward to working closely with the dedicated men and women of the Merced Fire Department as we continue to serve and safeguard our community.”
Parker, who was hired as Merced fire chief in December 2020, told The Merced FOCUS this week he has been hired as an assistant fire chief for Sacramento Fire Department, where he previously worked for 21 years.
City Manager Scott McBride said Wilson brings solid experience to the interim chief role, having served in all ranks of the Merced Fire Department, including five years in a chief officer role.
“With a proven track record of dedication to public safety and commitment to excellence, Wilson is well-positioned to lead the Merced Fire Department during this critical transition,” McBride said in the release.
A Merced College graduate who lives in the community with his wife Tiffany and their three children, Wilson will oversee a department that operates five fire stations.
According to the city’s website, Merced Fire responded to 11,256 calls for service in 2023.
The department employs 87 public safety members and fire support personnel.
