A man who had a knife was shot and killed early Thursday morning in north Merced.  

The victim has been identified by the Merced County Coroner as Gilbert Garibay, 73.

Details are preliminary. Police reported the shooting, which involved two officers, happened at about 1 a.m. just north of Collins Drive on M Street.

Police reported the suspect had a knife and approached the officers, despite warnings to stop. The officers fired their service weapons and the suspect was fatally wounded. 

The officers were not hurt. ABC 30 reported the officers had responded to the scene after receiving calls about a man running into traffic.
