Starting this month, the City of Merced is launching a new red-light camera safety program designed to reduce reckless driving and improve public safety, according to a city news release.

Two automated cameras have been installed at the intersection of 16th Street and R Street, monitoring traffic in both directions.

The program, managed in partnership with traffic technology company Verra Mobility, will begin with a 30-day warning period starting the week of April 21, the release said.

After the warning period, citations will be issued to drivers who run red lights or turn right without coming to a complete stop at the intersection.

Captured violations will be reviewed and verified by law enforcement before any tickets are sent.

“These cameras have been shown to reduce crashes and serious injuries,” Merced Police Chief Steven Stanfield said in the release.

“Our goal is to deter dangerous driving behavior and make Merced’s streets safer for everyone—drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians alike.”
