The Merced Focus has promoted veteran journalist Brianna Vaccari to serve as editor.

Vaccari is moving into the new role after working for two years as senior accountability reporter for the Central Valley Journalism Collaborative, the nonprofit that publishes The Merced Focus.

As editor, Vaccari will work closely with reporters, guide news coverage and continue to contribute her own reporting to The Merced Focus

“I appreciate the Merced residents who have trusted me enough to tell portions of their stories over the last two years,” Vaccari said.

“I look forward to serving readers in a different way and helping our team deliver top-quality news for Merced moving forward.”

Prior to joining CVJC, Vaccari worked for many years as a reporter at The Fresno Bee and the Merced Sun-Star, with a focus on local politics.

Born and raised in Reedley in Fresno County, Vaccari earned her bachelor’s degree in journalism from Fresno State. Her coverage of Valley issues has earned numerous awards from California News Publishers Association and Gruner awards.

Patton named CVJC managing editor

Victor A. Patton, The Merced Focus’ prior editor, is moving into an expanded role as managing editor of Central Valley Journalism Collaborative.

In his new role, Patton will oversee ongoing operations at The Merced FOCUS and CVJC’s health equity newsroom, The Intersection. He also will help establish and oversee The Modesto Focus, which will launch later this year.

“Launching The Merced Focus a year ago was one of the highlights of my career,” Patton said.

“I look forward to working with a new crew of journalists and community partners in the upcoming months as we start The Modesto Focus. There is so much to be excited about moving forward.”

Before joining CVJC, Patton worked for many years as an editor for newspapers including The Fresno Bee, San Francisco Examiner, The Modesto Bee and Merced Sun-Star.
