A Merced County native has been appointed as Merced’s permanent fire chief, after more than a year of leading the city’s fire department in an interim capacity.
Casey Wilson was named to the fire chief role Thursday, after a search conducted by city officials.
The Le Grand High grad became interim chief in April last year after the departure of Derek Parker, who now works for Sacramento Fire Department.
City Manager Scott McBride said in a news release Wilson demonstrated “exceptional” leadership as interim chief, displaying an ability to manage complex operations, budgets and community partnerships.
McBride said he’s confident Wilson’s experience will continue to improve the fire department and public safety.
According to the release, Wilson began working as firefighter in 2003. He has held every rank inside the Merced Fire Department.
Under Wilson’s leadership, Merced Fire Department’s Station 53 near the Merced Mall achieved advanced life support (ALS) status – the first fire station in Merced County to have that added capability.
Advanced life support training enables first responders to care for patients with a high level of care. According to the American Red Cross, that can include advanced airway management, IV access, medication administration, and advanced cardiac life support.
He also oversaw the addition of two Type One Engines and the launch of Squad 53. That marked the first time Merced Fire introduced an additional frontline response unit in 65 years, the release said.
Wilson’s annual salary in the chief role is $187,722.
