An effort aimed at bringing new life and increased safety to the heart of Merced is now in full swing.

City officials and community supporters on Tuesday officially launched the Downtown Merced Property-Based Improvement District (PBID) and its Clean and Safe Initiative.

Merced’s PBID has been in the works for years, with numerous community meetings and discussions. It’s possible through annual tax assessments paid by downtown businesses owners to enhance the area and create a welcoming environment for visitors, city officials said in a news release.

Spearheaded by the Downtown Merced Property Owners Association, the initiative will bring new resources and dedicated teams to the downtown area, focusing on maintenance, hospitality and beautification.

The city is also partnering with local organization Restore Merced to oversee the creation of five new ambassador positions.

The ambassadors will focus on hospitality and maintenance services. Additionally, they will provide individuals facing barriers to employment with resources, according to the release.

The Central Valley Opportunity Fund also provided a grant to Restore Merced to support that aim.

Mike Harris, who represents District 3 on the Merced City Council, which includes downtown, said he’s excited to support business owners, operators and residents who are leading the effort.

“The PBID and Clean and Safe Initiative will help create a vibrant, thriving community where people want to live, work, and visit,” Harris said in the release. “I’m looking forward to seeing our downtown flourish and am honored to be a part of this effort to build a bright, successful future for everyone in our community.”
