Merced‘s parks received key financial support this week, as the Central Valley Opportunity Fund awarded a $150,000 grant to the Parks and Community Services department.
The funds are geared toward supporting the development of a Parks, Recreation and Open Space Master Plan, according to a news release from the Central Valley Opportunity Fund.
The money will be used to hire a parks consultant who will engage with Merced residents, local businesses, community-based organizations and government agencies.
The goal is to ultimately create a master plan that reflects Merceds ‘diverse needs and vision for its parks.
“Investing in the future of Merced’s parks and recreational spaces is investing in the well-being of our community,” Kim Garner, Merced regional director for the Central Valley Community Foundation, said in the release.
”This master plan will be a critical tool for sustainable development and community
engagement, ensuring that our parks serve as vibrant, inclusive spaces for all residents.”
The master plan will serve as the first step towards a potential Parks and Recreation Bond
measure that will ensure the long-term sustainability and affordability of the proposed projects.
As the previous master plan was written in 2004, a new plan would be expected to address current and future needs, including standardizing park amenities to ensure they continue to serve the community effectively.
Additionally, it will provide a framework for facilities displaced by the high-speed rail development, the release said.
“This master plan will help us create a vision for the future that aligns with the community’s needs and aspirations, promoting sustainability and accessibility,” Christopher Jensen, Merced’s director of Parks and Community Services, said in the release.
